Favourite reads

We have all been thinking about our favourite books in store and our favourite hidden gem (the book that doesn't necessarily get all the publicity or the prizes but is a guaranteed great read). Which book is your favourite and which book is your hidden gem?
I'll start the ball rolling and suggest Jasper Jones and the hidden gem is Modoc.

  1. How about The Slap as a favourite and the hidden gem is When God was a Rabbit? - Catherine

  2. I woke up this morning and thought “what about Watership Down? (although why I was thinking about rabbits at 4.30am is something I don’t want to think too deeply about), and then “what about Hitchhikers Guide? And the Hobbit? and for that matter the Harry Potter series, and Jonathan Livingstone Seagull?

The list goes on. I'm also recommending the following in the shop at the moment:

    Jasper Jones
The Unlikely voyage of Jack de Crow
    Sarum (Edward Rutherford)
    Azincourt (Bernard Cornwell)
The Guernsey Potato Peel Pie and Literary Society
    The Other Hand (Chris Cleave)
    Incendiary (Chris Cleave)
    One Day (David Nichols)
    The Wreckage - (Michael Robotham)

    And for young adults:

    Ask and Answer series
    Hunger Games

    And kids:

    Some Dogs Do (surprise!)
    Brilliant world of Tom Gates

  5. I agree with Laura on Jane Eyre and The Outsiders. These are great books and are ones that I like to recommend to teens venturing into adult fiction.

    My absolute favourites include:
    The Tin Drum (Grass)
    Slaughterhouse Five (Vonnegut)
    The Collector (Fowles)
No Country for Old Men (McCarthy)
    The Outsider (Camus)
    In Cold Blood (Capote)
    Death in Venice (Mann)

Yes they're all oldies but they are important books, memorable, beautiful and still being sold every week in every bookstore around the world and loved anew.

    And my favourite non-fictions
The Man Who Mistook His Wife For a Hat (Sacks)
    Just Kids (Smith)
and ...just to mix it up a bit... I have a very soft spot for Russell Brand's My Booky Wook

  6. Definitely will be recommending Harry Potter and The Hobbit to those who haven't read them and Rick Riodan's "Percy Jackson" series to the early teens.

My favourite children fantasy books are Dragon Rider by Cornelia Funke as well as the "Ink" triology also by Cornelia Funke. I agree with Laura and Catherine on Jane Eyre as well as Pride and Prejudice, two great oldies that are still loved today. I'm also recommending the latest Maggie Stiefvator novel "Scorpio Races" and "Blood Red Road" by Moira Young to young adults as well as the Eragon series (by Paolini) to any fantasy lovers.
